Whoop for Joy bookWhoop for Joy A Christmas Wish

By Jane Briggs-Bunting, Illustrated by Jon Buechel

Whoop is the story of a young girl uprooted from her friends when her father is transferred to another state. She copes with feelings of loneliness and pending sibling rivalry through her unexpected friendship with the horse next door, a retired race horse named Whoop for Joy. When Whoop develops a life threatening ailment, the little girl learns the true meaning of sibling life.

The story is, in part, a fictionalized account of the real Whoop's battle with a hoof disease known as founder and horse person's lore that all animals can talk at midnight on Christmas Eve.

This 32 page, hard cover book with nine original, full color illustrations sold more than 2,500 copies in less than four weeks when it galloped into southeastern Michigan stores in Fall, 1995.
